What Does 'Leathered' Finish Mean — and Is It Right for You?

Leathered granite: the finish that absorbs light rather than reflecting it — and hides fingerprints better than any polished surface.

Leathered is one of the most distinctive stone finishes available — and one of the least understood.

What Is a Leathered Finish?

A leathered finish is created by running diamond-tipped brushes across the surface of the stone after it's been honed (ground to a flat, matte surface). The brushing process opens up the natural pores of the stone slightly, creating a subtle texture that feels like — as the name suggests — soft leather.

The result is a surface that's matte rather than glossy, with a gentle tactile quality that polished stone doesn't have.

How It Looks

You notice the texture when you run your hand across it. From a distance, it just looks like a stone that has more depth than usual.

Same stone, two finishes. The leathered surface has depth and warmth that polished stone can’t replicate.

Leathered stone has a depth and richness that polished stone can't replicate. The matte finish absorbs light rather than reflecting it, which gives the stone a warmer, more organic appearance. Colors tend to look slightly deeper and more saturated than the same stone in a polished finish.

The texture is subtle — you notice it when you run your hand across the surface, but it doesn't look rough or unfinished.

Practical Advantages

**Fingerprint resistance:** The matte, textured surface hides fingerprints and water spots far better than polished stone. This is a significant practical advantage in a busy kitchen.

**Scratch concealment:** Minor surface scratches are less visible on a leathered surface than on a polished one.

**Slip resistance:** The texture provides slightly more grip than polished stone, which can be useful for bathroom vanities.

Practical Considerations

**Cleaning:** The texture can trap fine debris more than a polished surface. A soft brush or cloth works better than a flat wipe for thorough cleaning.

**Sealing:** Leathered natural stone still requires sealing, and the slightly more open surface may require more frequent sealing than the same stone in a polished finish.

**Availability:** Not all stones are available in a leathered finish. Granite and quartzite leather beautifully. Marble can be leathered but is less common. Quartz is not available in a leathered finish.

Is It Right for You?

If you want a countertop that hides daily wear, has a warm and organic quality, and stands out from the typical polished stone kitchen, leathered finish is worth serious consideration.
