Sealing granite takes about 15 minutes and protects your investment for years.

Granite is durable, but it does require periodic sealing to stay stain-resistant.

Does All Granite Need Sealing?

Not all granite is the same. Some varieties are very dense and barely absorb water; others are more porous and require more frequent sealing. The only way to know for sure is to test your specific stone.

The Water Test

Pour a small amount of water (about a tablespoon) onto your granite surface and let it sit for 15 minutes. If the water beads up and doesn't darken the stone, your sealer is still working. If the stone darkens where the water sits, it's time to reseal.

How Often to Seal

As a general guideline:

  • Light-colored granite: every 1–2 years
  • Dark granite: every 3–5 years (denser, less porous)
  • After the water test shows absorption: immediately

How to Seal Granite

Sealing granite is a straightforward DIY task:

**Step 1:** Clean the surface thoroughly and let it dry completely (at least 24 hours after cleaning).

**Step 2:** Apply a thin, even coat of stone sealer with a clean cloth or applicator pad.

**Step 3:** Let the sealer penetrate for the time specified on the product (typically 10–20 minutes).

**Step 4:** Wipe off any excess sealer with a clean cloth before it dries.

**Step 5:** Let the surface cure for the time specified (typically 24–48 hours) before using it normally.

What Sealer to Use

Use a penetrating impregnating sealer specifically formulated for natural stone. Avoid topical sealers that sit on the surface — they can create a hazy film and wear unevenly.
